The story of Bodegas Pinord started more than 150 years ago, when the Tetas family began to make wines on their estate at Sant Cugat Sesgarrigues from grapes they grew themselves and vinified in the traditional way. Since then, the wines produced by the family have been growing in prestige and the family name has become inseparably linked to the name of Penedés wine. In 1942 José Maria Tetas established the existing wine cellars at Vilafranca del Penedés, only 4 km from the original estate. At the present time, Pinord has facilities that can produce more than five million bottles a year, whilst retaining the family integrity and quality standards for which they have become well-known in the area. Today, two generations work together in the family business.
More recently Pinord have established themselves in Priorat and Montsant and the popularity of these new wines is growing all the time.
The 2016 vintage started in the middle of September. The weather was warm until the third week of September with cooler nights towards the end of the month. The sunny weather conditions, along with the absence of heavy rains, produced ripe and healthy grapes.
The vineyards are located in the heart of the DO Montsant, just south of Tarragona. DO Montsant was recognised as an independent DO in 2001, with its rich agricultural heritage, mountain range and proximity to the coast, it offers a unique viticultural terroir. Influenced by the Mediterranean Sea, the climate is warm with dry summers and a low annual rainfall. The Bodegas Pinord vines are grown at an altitude of 370 metres above sea level, where the soils are a very rich clayey limestone, with a small proportion of slate. Harvesting takes place by hand, with close monitoring and daily picking to ensure the berries are harvested in perfect condition.
The grapes underwent a short maceration with the skins to gain the desired levels of fruit and colour but without taking on too much astringency. The alcoholic fermentation took place under controlled conditions. The wine was then aged in American oak barrels for three to four months, where a malolactic fermentation took place, softening the resulting wine and imbuing the wine with subtle oak notes.
A fresh and juicy blend from the DO Montsant region of northern Spain. Highlighted aromas of forest fruits and wild red berries surround a smooth, elegant, fruit driven palate, combined with subtle spice, chocolate and vanilla overtones. Long and moreish on the finish.
This versatile red accompanies partridge, rich warming stews, roasted chicken and a cheese platter at the end of a meal.
