Intense and enticing, a heady aroma of chocolate, plums, damson and blackberry, with oceans of ripe fruit on the palate and a long, generous finish.
"I went through the desert on a horse with no name…" Inspired by the song by America (which was written in Dorset, England! - and was itself inspired by a Salvador Dali painting) we toured extensively throughout California until we liked upon Bear Creek winery in Lodi. These wines are the results of the fruits of our labour. But what is Calico Mane? Calico is a textile, a fish, a town, a mountain range in the Mohave Desert and a species of American horse. The mane belongs to the horse. Calico Mane: a symbol of the wild west of America. And for very individual wines: a very individual label. Definitely not a horse with no name...
Grapes are sourced from distinguished vineyards in the Sierra Foothills and Lodi appellations to the east of San Francisco.
The grapes were fermented at low temperature and aged for six months in stainless steel.
The intensity of this wine means it is a great match for foods like gourmet burgers, oven roasted chicken, sausages, grilled steak, red-sauced pasta dishes and BBQ ribs.
