Producer Note

Bolney's story began when founders Rodney and Janet Pratt planted three acres of vines, five decades ago, to create what was then one of the very first commercial vineyards in England. In the 1990s, Sam Linter, their daughter, joined them and grew the vineyard’s acreage and the quality of the wines. Sam continues to run the operation as Managing Director and Head Winemaker. Winemakers Liz Morgan and Alex Rabagliati produce elegant, artisanal wines, which beautifully showcase the Sussex terroir. In 2017 they were awarded the prestigious accolade of 'UK Winery of the Year' at the UK Wine Awards.

Vintage

Perfect weather throughout the year culminated in a September of warm, clear days and cool nights, which were crucial in maintaining acidity levels and aromatic development. The quality of fruit was extremely high, with large bunches of clean fruit.

Vineyard

The site is 15 miles from the south coast in the heart of West Sussex, with views of the South Downs. The vines are planted on gentle slopes of sandstone, which aids drainage and provides good mineral pick up for the two vineyard sites of Foxhole and Pookchurch. The vines are trained with high sylvos trellising. The shoots grow downwards and the fruiting zones are high in order to reduce predation by Roe Deer. This trellising method also allows breezes to enter the canopy, reducing humidity inside the canopy, which helps to fight against mildew.

Winemaking

The fruit was selected from the Bolney and Pookchurch vineyards. The Pinot Noir grapes were hand-picked, crushed and fermented on the skins for approximately seven days at controlled temperatures of 25 to 28°C. Fermentation took place in small individual tanks, allowing cap punch-downs by hand, in order to extract colour, flavour and structure. After pressing, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation in oak barrels to provide a softer, rounder finish.

Tasting Note

A soothing and perfectly balanced Pinot Noir with seamlessly integrated notes of leather, spice and chocolate framing a core of fresh plum. Soft tannins and juicy red cherry on the palate with a smooth and creamy finish.

Serving Suggestion

The perfect accompaniment to roast chicken, pulled pork, duck, rabbit or game.
