Alpha Estate is located in Amyndeon, North West Greece. It is the brainchild of two visionaries, second generation vine grower Makis Mavridis and Bordeaux trained winemaker Angelos Iatrides. Angelos is one of the most talented winemakers working in Europe. This pristine estate in the cool highlands of Western Macedonia comprises 120 hectares of privately owned single block vineyards and employs the most up to date vineyard techniques and winemaking technology to produce world class wines from French and indigenous Greek varietals.
The estate comprises 75ha of linear, privately owned vineyards, situated at an altitude of 620-710 metres above sea level, located in the "Children" and"Alpheta"sub-regions of the Amyndeon plateau. The vineyards are planted to a density of 3,700 shoots / ha., yielding approximately 30hl/ha post green harvest andselection. The soils are sandy to sandy-clay, providing excellent drainage over a thin limestone layer.
The grapes were de-stemmed, without crushing and underwent a cold maceration with skin contact under controlled conditions. Alcoholic fermentation took place atgradually increasing temperatures, the wine was then maintained "sur lie" for eight months with regular stirring. The wine underwent a minimum of twelve months ageing in Alliers - Bertrange oak casks with medium to light toast. The wine saw no treatment or filtration before bottling and spent 12 months in bottle.
Powerful, pungent aromas of sweet cherry, candied plum and toasty vanilla oak lead to a full bodied palate of dark fruits, with peppery, spicy accents in the background. The solid tannins build through the finish but there is plenty of supporting depth of fruit here, not to mention a bright acid lift on the back that addsenergy.
This wine pairs harmoniously with juicy red meats, barbecued venison marinated with spice or as an accompaniment to aromatic and piquant cheeses.
