Origin'Elle Extra Brut, Champagne Francoise Bedel 2011

Tasting Note

The pleasing round and fruity bouquet marries apricots and peaches with raisins and dried apricots. Rich aromatic notes of cognac and Armagnac on the nose, while the pleasingly supple palate with hints of dried fruit, reflects the bouquet. The finish shines with maturity, freshness and has a pleasant thirst quenching quality.

Producer Note

Champagne Francoise Bedel, a three-generation family-estate is based at Crouttes-sur-Marne, a pretty village on the edge of the Champagne region. The family own 8.4 hectares of vineyards with vines aged between 20 to 60 years. The parcels of vineyard are spread along the banks of the river Marne over four areas: Crouttes-Sur Marne, Nanteuil-Sur-Marne, Charly-Sur-Marne, and Villiers-Saint-Denis. Bedel operates using biodynamic principles which they believe make for high quality wines with their own personality and reflect the unique elements of the terroir.

Biodynamic viticulture including ploughing the soil, earthing up, de-earthing.

Part of the harvest is vinified in oak barrels to create the right conditions for controlled oxidation and make the wines rounder and more opulent. The remainder goes into enamelled tanks. Racking sessions and bottlings are timed to coincide with the most propitious days, according to Maria Thund's lunar calendar. Aged three years on lees to allow this vinous wine to develop its aromatic complexity.

Serving Suggestion

A Champagne of character and the beautiful round notes of the ageing on lees, but with a very light dosage. It would pair amazingly with trout. hake, sea food, scallops tartare, oysters or even with caviar.

Pinot Meunier 75%, Chardonnay 15%, Pinot Noir 10%
