A rich, deep golden Champagne, wonderful scents of citrus intermingled with notes of fig and toasted hazelnuts. An exquisite mouthfeel that is lively but precise, with a creamy, seductive finish.
When Louis Roederer inherited the Champagne House in 1833 he took a visionary approach to enriching his vines, aiming to master every stage of the wine's creation. He forged the wine's unique style, character, and taste. Louis Roederer acquired some of Champagne's grand cru vineyards as he believed all great wine depends on the quality of the soil and a passion for tradition. The Louis Roederer House remains an independent, family-owned company and is now managed by the seventh generation of the lineage. The House of Louis Roederer's annual exports total three million bottles around the world.
2008 was initially a difficult year, with a damp spring resulting in challenging conditions in the vineyards. However a warmer and drier August and a fine, warm September helped to regain the maturation of the grapes and resulted in an excellent vintage. The Champagnes of 2008 are classically styled with fresh scintillating acidity balanced by powerful flavour concentration.
The Roederer Champagne House owns 240 hectares situated in the finest villages of Ay, Verzenay, Vervy, Avize and Cramant where the plots rank between 95% and 100% on the official classification scale for the 'Crus'. Roederer sources two thirds of its grape requirements from its own vineyards. The average age of its vines is 42 years, the youngest being 25 years and the oldest 64. Roederer has a considerable commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture; 40 hectares are biodynamic and 15 hectares are organic. The vintage is hand-harvested in mid September.
Only Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Roederer's 10 most celebrated Crus are used in the production of this legendary cuvée. The grapes from 410 parcels were pressed on site and a precise selection process was followed by plot by plot vinification. 25% was fermented in oak and 16% underwent malolactic fermentation to moderate the refreshing acidity of the 2008 vintage. The 2008 spent nine years on the lees (longer than any previous Cristal) and was disgorged with a dosage of 7.75 grams per litre.
A rich, deep golden Champagne, with a fine stream of tiny bubbles, wonderful scents of citrus layered with notes of fig and toasted hazelnuts. An exquisite mouthfeel that is lively but precise, with notes of yellow peach, a hint of spice and a creamy, seductive finish.
Meant to be savoured with caviar.
