This is a dry rosé with a heady perfume of fruits de bois and a touch of wild herbs.
Located in Murrumbateman in the Canberra Wine District, boutique winery Eden Road was established in 2008 by businessman Chris Coffman. It made an immediate and stunning impact by winning the ‘Jimmy Watson Award’ for its first vintage of The Long Road Shiraz (2008), Australia’s most prized wine accolade. These elegant and refined wines are produced from some of Australia's highest vineyards in the emerging region of Australia's 'High Country'. The unique combination of altitude and some of the world's oldest soils, which were formed over 400 million years ago, has resulted in a highly prized collection of original and exciting wines. New winemaker Celine Rousseau has devoted 17 years to working in the 'High Country' and has developed a strong understanding and passion for these cool climate vineyards and their wines.
2016 saw a wet spring, followed by a warm, dry summer. The warm weather continued into autumn, resulting in a rapid maturation of the grapes and a condensed vintage. The wines are full-flavoured with lower than usual acidity. Very approachable as young wines.
Eden Road works towards natural management in the vineyards with minimum intervention in terms of spraying, but hard work in terms of manually tending the vines and managing the soils. They follow organic viticulture where possible and all vines are hand-picked. The majority of the fruit for this wine comes from 20 year old Pinot Gris vines from a vineyard just north of the Eden Road winery in Murrumbateman. The Murrumbateman region is characterised by warm dry days and cool nights, perfect for producing aromatic wines. A handful of the berries within the bunches dotted among the vines, have naturally mutated back to Pinot Noir, resulting in the pronounced, but completely natural colour of this elegant rosé. The vineyard lies at an altitude of 630 metres above sea level on an ancient decomposed granite belt, making this an excellent site for achieving ripeness with balanced acidity.
Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks to reserve the pure fruit flavours. 15% of the must underwent skin contact, imparting the delicate rosé colour from the pink skinned Pinot Gris grapes. Fermentation was started by carefully selected yeast at cool temperatures, retaining the varietal characteristics. The wine was aged on its lees in tank for a period of eight months, prior to being prepared for bottling.
Bright rose petal in colour from the pink skinned Pinot Gris grapes; this is a dry rosé with a heady perfume of strawberries and nashi pears. The vibrant youthful palate has a lovely texture and length.
A stunning apéritif; or with fresh tuna, Caesar salad or a charcuterie plate.
